What is Book & Claim and Why Does It Matter?

The Most Efficient and Cost-Effective Way to Decarbonize Hard-to-Abate Sectors

Book & Claim is catalyzing the shift away from fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors. It empowers customers anywhere to decarbonize their operations, regardless of where fuel is produced or delivered.

Hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, shipping, and steel are some of the largest contributors to global climate change due to their carbon (CO2) emissions. These sectors are considered hard-to-abate because they can’t be easily electrified. Instead, they rely on renewable fuels, like sustainable aviation fuel and green hydrogen, to reduce emissions.

These fuels are in short supply, and they’re often produced far away from where they’ll be used, which means access has been limited in the past. But the good news is that a chain-of-custody model called Book & Claim can help companies take advantage of these fuels, no matter where their operations are located.

Book & Claim:

  • Delivers decarbonization benefits to Scope 1 and Scope 3 off-takers that may want to take physical delivery of our fuel.
  • Allows the environmental attributes of our fuels to be tracked and delivered separately from the fuel itself.
  • Is recognized as a credible and necessary method to reduce supply chain emissions and scale the market for sustainable fuels.
  • Encompasses rigorous fuel quality certification, robust accounting and tracking frameworks to protect against double counting, and independent certification.

How Does Book & Claim Work?

Some of the world’s leading companies are currently using Book & Claim to decarbonize their air travel and transport through the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc). For  example, Microsoft has committed to reducing over 400,000 tons of CO2 from its corporate air travel and supply chain cargo over the course of ten years. This is the equivalent of flying 824,053 economy-class passengers from Seattle to New York and back on fully decarbonized flights.

Here’s how it works:  We produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at our Paramount, California facility. The SAF has environmental attributes associated with it, including the value of its carbon reduction. This value is separated from the fuel itself, calculated, tracked, and allocated to a company seeking to reduce their aviation emissions. This company now owns the environmental benefits, while the SAF itself is delivered to an airport close to our production facility to displace fossil fuel in the supply chain. This not only minimizes the logistical burden and transport costs, but it also minimizes the emissions associated with moving the fuel.

Why Is It So Important?

Because companies can claim the environmental benefits through Book & Claim without taking delivery of the physical fuel, any business, in any sector and in any location, can reduce their aviation-related emissions. This action from corporate leaders is an important step in helping to de-risks the investment needed to expand SAF production, which is essential to driving down cost and increasing adoption.

“Book & Claim is the single most important method to scale carbon solutions for aviation,” said Adam Klauber, World Energy’s Vice President of Sustainability and ESG. “It allows our customers to confidently purchase SAFc and, in turn, their demand unlocks new loans and investments to build SAF plants.”

This approach is a new way of thinking. It’s designed to unlock the value of decarbonization and help leaders accelerate their efforts to make net zero real, in aviation and beyond.
