Flex-Fuel Cars Are 85% of New Sales in Brazil

10.09.07

Flex-fuel cars, introduced in Brazil in 2003, now represent 85% of new car sales. By 2020, Petrobras expects these cars to make up 72% of Brazil's light-vehicle fleet, up from 13% in 2006.

By 2020, Brazilians will consume more ethanol than gasoline because flex-fuel cars will dominate the country's car fleet, according to Sergio Gabrielli, CEO of Petrobras. Flex-fuel can run on any mixture of gasoline and ethanol. Gasoline cars are expected to shrink to 13% from 71% over the same period.
