US company Algenol has signed an $850 million deal with Mexican company BioFields to grow algae for biofuel use.
Algenol says it plans to make 100 million gallons of ethanol in Mexico's Sonoran Desert by the end of the 2009 and increase to one billion gallons by the end of 2012.
