US and Brazil Defend Biofuels at UN Food Summit

06.04.08

In Rome, Italy, a three-day UN food summit has called for trade barriers to be reduced and food export bans to be lifted to ease increasing food prices. Most countries and international organizations cited multiple causes for increasing food costs, but views on how much each factor contributed varied widely.

The US and Brazil defended biofuel production, amid discussions of whether to scale back or push ahead with biofuels.

On Wednesday, the Islamic Development Bank donated $1.5 billion, as the UN acknowledged that food shortages would cost $15 billion to $30 billion a year to resolve.
