Biodiesel Investments Slowing In Southeast Asia

04.30.08

Plans to invest billions of dollars in biodiesel refineries across Southeast Asia have been put on hold as the prices of key feedstocks, particularly palm oil, have shot up amid surging food demand in China and India, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Southeast Asian biodiesel projects were forecast to produce five million metric tons of biodiesel a year upon completion, about half of Europe's total refining capacity in 2007.

The Indonesian government has said that $12.5 billion in new biofuel investments are in the pipeline for that country alone, but due to the current situation, many palm oil producers are now refocusing on more traditional products such as cooking oil.
