ConocoPhillips said it would work with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Iowa State University on research to identify promising cellulosic biomass conversion technologies for biofuel.
The group plans to develop conversion technologies using corn stalks, stems, leaves and other non-food agricultural residues, as well as hardy grasses and fast-growing trees as feedstocks for future transportation fuels.
The processes to be examined by the research group will include gasification, pyrolysis, and fermentation. The collaboration could lead to projects that provide publicly available, peer-reviewed papers and models, according to ConocoPhillips.
The company said each party is providing its own time and resources and the collaboration is expected to produce an initial report by January 2009.
