Indonesian Biodiesel Industry Says It Is Struggling

03.20.08

Indonesia’s biodiesel industry is dealing with imposition of a 2% export tax on biodiesel, delays in mandating the use of biodiesel, and a reduction in the mandated national bio-diesel blend from 5% to 2.5%, according to the Indonesia's Association of Biofuel Producers.

Last year, Indonesia unveiled a plan to become a hub for biofuel production and secured 58 production agreements worth $12.4 billion. To date, only nine biodiesel plants have been built and only four are operating, because of high feedstock costs. The four operating plants, with combined annual capacity of 810,000 mt, are at 15% of capacity.
