Soy Crop Area Expanding in Argentina

Soybean crops in Argentina now occupy more than half of the country's cropland, covering 16.9 million ha or 4 percent more than last year, according to estimates published by La Nacion.
However, the 2008 harvest is expected to be the same in size as 2007, about 47 million mt, because the larger area will only compensate for a widespread drop in yield caused by lack of rain.
Argentina is the world's third largest soybean producer, as well as the biggest producer and exporter of soybean oil globally, with an estimated 95% of its production traded abroad.
