World Energy's glycerin refining facility in Lakeland, FL has been upgraded to produce kosher grade glycerin.
Kosher certification was awarded to the facility by Rabbi Nathan Greenblatt of Memphis, TN. The certification is valid until February 2009.
Glycerin, the main by-product of biodiesel production, is refined for use in high-end cosmetic products such as soaps, lotions and shampoos. Each gallon of biodiesel production results in about three-quarters of a pound of crude glycerin.
World Energy also announced that its Director of Commodities & Risk Management, Jerry Petak, will oversee all of the company’s glycerin operations. Petak has more than 35 years experience in domestic and international agricultural products, including procurement, sales, product development and operational management at prominent companies such as Archer Daniels Midland.
“Availability of kosher glycerin is limited,” Petak said. “This will help us meet the strong demand from our customers for this premium product.” World Energy’s Lakeland facility has the capacity to refine about 10 million lbs of glycerin per year.
