Goldman Sachs Forecasts $105 Bbl Oil in 2008
02.08.08
The commodities chief at Goldman Sachs warns that vulnerable regions of the world face the risk of famine over the next three years if rising energy costs spill over into a food crunch.
Goldman Sachs forecasts that oil will be priced at $105 a barrel by the end of 2008 and warns of a ‘crisis mode’ across the commodity complex in the next 18 to 36 months.
World oil production has been stagnant for four years, failing to keep up with increasing demand from Asia and the Mideast, and biofuels are helping to plug the gap, taking crops away from food production. Land use for biofuels has surged from 12 million ha to more than 80 million worldwide over six years, and while biofuel provides 3% of world energy needs now, this will rise to over 10% by 2030, Goldman says.
