Canadian companies, Lignol Innovations and Suncor Energy are planning to build Colorado's first cellulosic ethanol plant.

The $88 million project could be located in Commerce City and completed by 2012. The US Department of Energy will provide $30 million toward piloting the plant.

During the demonstration stage, 100 tons of wood residue will be processed a day to produce 2 million gallons of ethanol a year.
