Groups React to EU Energy Package
01.25.08
In the EU Parliament, German Christian Democrats and Socialist groups have reacted positively to the EU energy package announced yesterday, while Conservatives questioned its costs.
The Greens called the biofuel target “nonsense.” Biotech industry association EuropaBio suggested a staged approach in which fuels with a relatively low greenhouse gas savings threshold would be permitted initially, with greenhouse gas reduction requirements phased in over time.
The European Federation for Transport and Environment called the 10% biofuels target a ‘dead end’ and Birdlife said the biofuel policy was deeply flawed.
British Liberal Democrats raised concerns over the biofuel target. Irish Fianna Fail said “many say the 10% goal is too high.”
The Association of the Chocolate, Biscuit & Confectionery Industries of the EU and the International Margarine Association of the Countries of Europe asked the EU to reconsider the 10% target.
