US Senate Passes Biofuels RFS in Energy Bill

The US Senate has approved an energy bill by a bipartisan vote of 86-8 to establish a renewable energy requirement that will increase domestic use of "biomass-based diesel" – including biodiesel – from 500 million gallons in 2009 to 1 billion gallons in 2012.
The bill will now be forwarded to the US House for further consideration. The White House indicated that if the bill as passed by the Senate is approved by the House and sent to the President, he will sign it into law. The US House may consider the measure next week.
