US CLIMATE LEGISLATION IS 'CRUCIAL' TO GLOBAL EFFORTS

Progress on US climate legislation this year is “crucial” to maintaining global efforts to reduce GHGs, the EU's top climate official said Thursday, Argus reports.
“There will be challenges” for international negotiations if the US does not show it is able to live up to its pledge under the Copenhagen Accord to reduce emissions 17pc below 2005 levels by 2020, EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard said.
“It affects the perception of the United States being the leader,” she said. Without signs from the US that legislation is likely to pass, it may be difficult to convince developing countries and the EU to take significant action, Hedegaard said.
