US EPA Releases RFS2

US EPA issued RFS2 this week including some major changes from the previous rule:

- Renewable fuels must account for 8.25% of total gasoline and diesel sales in 2010 to meet a mandate of nearly 13 billion gal of renewable fuels this year.
- The cellulosic ethanol output target is set at 6.5 million gal this year instead of the proposed 100 million gal.
- The 2009/2010 combined biomass diesel output target is set at 1.15 billion gal. by year-end.
- Measuring carbon dioxide emissions from ethanol and other biofuels includes indirect land use change, but biodiesel and renewable diesel from soy oil or waste oils, fats, and greases will meet the 50% GHG reduction threshold.
- Ethanol from sugarcane complies with the 50% reduction threshold for advanced biofuels.
