US May Adopt 36 Billion Gallon RFS
12.07.07
The US House of Representatives has passed the Energy Independence and Security Act to expand the nation’s Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) to 36 billion gallons by 2022.
The legislation specifically requires that 500 million gallons of biodiesel and biomass-based diesel fuel be blended into the diesel pool in 2009, gradually increasing to one billion gallons by 2012.
The bill extends the biodiesel tax incentive through Dec. 31, 2010, but excludes co-processed renewable diesel from receiving the tax credit along with foreign-produced biodiesel brought to the US then exported.
Before the legislation can become law, it must be passed by the US Senate and signed by the president. The White House has indicated it may veto the bill if passed into law as the House version.
