The world's agricultural production is projected to decrease by 16% by 2020 due to global warming and shrinking land use for certain crops, according to a report by the International Food Policy Research Institute.
The report said growing demand in rapidly developing countries such as, China and India for processed food and meat and dairy products is driving up prices for those goods, as well as for staple grains used to feed cattle. Using crops for biofuels will also reduce the amount of available food and increase prices.
The report claims that if countries implement their existing biofuel production plans and new countries begin biofuel production, corn prices could increase by 26 %, oilseeds by 18% and sugar by 12% by 2020.
