Scientists Dispute Biofuels Study

02.19.08

Scientists at the US Department of Energy have disputed a widely reported study published last week by the journal "Science" that claims using biofuels produces more greenhouse gases than using petroleum-based fuels.

A leading scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory and another at the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy said the study ignores improvements in agricultural productivity that would lessen the need for additional cropland to meet increased demand for corn-based bio-fuels.

A policy brief from the Minneapolis based Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR)also criticized the authors for advancing a conclusion not supported by the facts of the study.
